Tired of Typing ( Temporarily?) on the Thursday NO PO Open Thread
Do you ever get tired of typing? Just the process, and in my case the constant typo fixing, or saying some of the same things over and over in different places? Coming up with topics to type about? I have been keyboarding since the mid 80's, but, have never been a great typist, though I was at one time way before that. Maybe I am just tired of the whole business right now?

I do almost everything on my phone. So it’s more pecking than typing
I didn’t take typing in high school and I didn’t take my first keyboarding class until the 1990s. I am not a natural typist by any means. I type as little as possible

That voice to text feature on phones is great, use it all the time but does require a must go back to double-check . Occasionally printing out something you never meant at all

I speak Pittsburgese with a dash of Northern West Virginia the speech to text function seems to have trouble translating lol

Re: Tired of Typing ( Temporarily?) on the Thursday NO PO Open Thread
The single most useful class I took in High School was typing. We learned on IBM Selectric typewriters which were common at the time, computers and word processors being a luxury for most people back then. My Mom used used to be a data input specialist for a while a couple years prior to that at a newspaper. She typed all the private ads into a big specialized machine, and later typed in announcements into a different machine that broadcast them over the cable TV system. Crazy stuff for the early 80's! After that she was a secretary for local Educational Service District where they all used Apple II computers and later Macintoshes, so I had access to those eventually. (She'd let me come in after hours and write my term papers in College.)
So I'm actually a very good "touch typist." I can't say "excellent" though, because what my Mom was. The last time I checked my speed I could type 65 Words Per Minute accurately, but transcribing words off a sheet of paper into a computer as such tests are done is not very real world. My Mom on the other hand used to be able to type upwards of 120 WPM. See the difference?
However I'm plenty fast and accurate enough to type up these comments quickly and accurately off the top of my head. I can type almost as fast as I can think the thoughts, and my preferred method of composing any written work is by typing. I'm very good at that.
Now @Randi mentioned she mostly types on her phone. I absolutely HATE typing on my phone! It takes forever. I know some people are almost as fast as me with a physical keyboard when using their phone, but not many. If I have to input a great deal of text on my phone I almost always simply use the speech-to-text function. It's become pretty good in the last six or seven years. I feel like a moron doing it, but it's a lot faster than those virtual keyboards for me.
My Grandfather back in the 80's used to type orders into a Telex machine, which was essentially a typewriter. He wasn't a typist at all, but you'd be amazed at how fast he was with two fingers. It was amazing to watch. It wasn't real typing, but it wasn't "hunt-and-peck" either. It's amazing what you can teach yourself to do when you do it all the time, every day.
Another one that's hilarious to me is my friend Rick. He's the IT person and database maintainer at a largish company, which means he is working with a keyboard all the time. Unlike me, he didn't take typing in high school. However I've watched him type, and it's fascinating. He's made up his own method using basically two fingers on each hand. It's like watching an Alien type. He's not as fast as me and he's not a "touch typist," but he gets the job done faster than you'd expect.

Re: Tired of Typing ( Temporarily?) on the Thursday NO PO Open Thread
I was typing 120 WPM when I was in school, but, after that, I didn't do it much, until the mid-eighties when I got into computers...I am fairly accurate at typing ( though I make unconscious errors, like using the wrong homophone even though I know the difference, or transposing letters in simple words)...but, not super fast now, I haven't timed myself in years...fast enough, I also tend to watch what I type as I type it now...Tarmaque wrote: ↑Thu Sep 30, 2021 3:19 pmThe single most useful class I took in High School was typing. I don't have a phone, but I briefly had one with texting capabilities and hated it, I wanted a real keyboard and thought it was slower and more tedious than just speaking to someone

Re: Tired of Typing ( Temporarily?) on the Thursday NO PO Open Thread
I used to misspell a number of words habitually. I knew the correct spelling, but for some reason when typing them I'd make the same error time after time. I'm pretty sure I've cured myself of that habit now (spell-check is a godsend, which actually teaches you to catch your common mistakes) but I do make the occasional typo. Usually something like "to" instead of "too" and similar. I'm also the king of "teh" instead of "the," but I usually catch that one if I'm watching what I'm typing.Z is for Zangie wrote: ↑Thu Sep 30, 2021 8:51 pmthough I make unconscious errors, like using the wrong homophone even though I know the difference, or transposing letters in simple words
But every once in a while I go through a period of not being able to type well at all. Lots of mistakes, usually involving correct spelling but letters jumbled up. I catch it and fix it, but it'll be whole sentences of jumbled up letters. Yesterday was one of those days. Today I'm fine.
I think I had a stroke.

Re: Tired of Typing ( Temporarily?) on the Thursday NO PO Open Thread
Yeah, I make the same kind of mistakes...like the, instead of the , wrong "to" etc, so it must be pretty normal...lol, I use a spell checker mostly for those typos, but, mine also makes grammatical corrections, only fails when your typo is an annual word, just the wrong one...lolTarmaque wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 3:57 pmI used to misspell a number of words habitually. Did you have any physical symptoms of a stroke? Or could it just be a bad day?

Hahaha! That was a joke. No, I did not have a stroke. Probably just a bad day. My brain was tired.Z is for Zangie wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 10:45 pmDid you have any physical symptoms of a stroke? Or could it just be a bad day?
I've been tweaking a tiny computer for playing movies at the beach house. It was a little challenging, but I got it configured how I like it. It's about the size of a deck of cards, and will Velcro on the side of the non-smart TV down there. Then I can load up a USB drive or SD card with a bunch of old movies and we can junk the old DVD and VHS player that's there now. I can put thirteen or fourteen movies in 1080p on a 32GB flash drive, which is more movies than they currently have down there on DVD and VHS. I also have several 64GB SD cards which would hold close to 30 movies each. It'll also play music files. My entire music collection would fit on a 32GB flash drive, but it's not my beach house so I'll leave it up to them to choose the music. We've already been talking about what movies to keep down there, but flash drives are cheap.

Oh. Right.
Counting TV series as single movies (which is ridiculous, but otherwise difficult to parse) my collection is probably bigger than that. Many of them unwatched.

Re: Tired of Typing ( Temporarily?) on the Thursday NO PO Open Thread
A side note: it takes an average of 20-30 minutes to rip a DVD to a digital format. Sometimes longer. Not to mention the time it takes to set up the rip. That would be a substantial investment in time. Probably it would be quicker to simply pirate them, which technically is in a legal gray area. You legally can rip DVDs for your own use. The physical DVD is your license to play them. Some authorities have argued that simply owning the DVD is license for you to also own however many digital copies you wish from whatever sources you wish for your own use, but this is not generally supported by the industry. That said, they don't generally prosecute people for that. They're more interested in people distributing unlicensed copies.
And then there's this:
xkcd "Steal This Comic"
