Fandom Fantasies on the Friday NO PO Open Thread
Of people you are fans of, whether historical figures ( Churchill, Elizabeth I), Authors, (Sir Arthur & Jim Butcher), Artists (Michaelangelo...I don't know a lot about art, but do knowquite a bit about him and his artwork)actors ( Chris Pratt and Sandra Bullock0 or fictional characters ( Harry Dresden and Merlin), who in any or all categories would you most like to meet/talk to/have dinner with? And Why? I have a ton, so I just took the categories and the first ones that came to mind I figured were my favorites and picked them...lol...

Re: Fandsom Fantasies on the Friday NO PO Open Thread
It's hilarious that Jim Butcher's collaborator artist for his graphic novels makes Thomas look just like him.
But realistically, he looks a lot more like he describes Harry. I think he puts a lot of himself into the character.

Oh jeeze, there are about nine independent graphic novels, and they're working on the first three books as graphic novels.Z is for Zangie wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 5:17 amI have the one graphic novel, not sure if there is another yet...and I love Thomas

Isaac Newton. Ben Franklin. Galileo. Mozart. Handel. Oh, and the person who invented the wheel.

Re: Fandom Fantasies on the Friday NO PO Open Thread
There are some actors I admire as human beings and some who I admire their work, but few combine the two. Most I like to watch on screen but wouldn't want to play poker with. Sebastian Stan is an exception. He's a pretty decent actor, who is almost universally known as an extremely nice person. On the levels of Tom Hanks. Now I think Hanks is an overrated actor, but he's definitely a nice guy. Stan would probably be great in a one-on-one situation, but a big social group probably not so much. Like me, he's supposed to be a huge introvert.
That said, I've always been a fan of Helen Mirren, and Patrick Stewart. I think both would be very good dinner party attendees. Also Stephen Fry. George Clooney is also supposed to be very pleasant in person.
But lately I've been absolutely charmed by Florence Pugh, who's an adorable chaos goddess. She'd be a lot of fun to share a meal with. Too young for me of course, but I'd still like to be friends. (And she cooks on YouTube and Tiktok too!)

I'm not surprised. He's an author of "Urban Fantasy" stories. A hack, but both Zangie and I enjoy his books.

I generally don't have much interest in actors personalities. I have a lot I respect for their ability.

Re: Fandom Fantasies on the Friday NO PO Open Thread
His "Dresden Files" books definitely improve in the middle, but you kinda have to read them from the beginning. The early books are not as good as the middle novels, but the last couple are not as good as the middle novels. But they're all chronological so you kinda have to read the early novels to know what's going on in the later novels. There are seventeen main novels in all, and a couple of collections of short stories. And then there are the graphic novels, some of which are new stories and some of which are versions of text stories. Jim Butcher was writing about one novel a year for a long time, then sort of fell off the map for a couple of years before reappearing with two new novels in rapid succession. Butcher himself has said he's starting to have difficulty thinking of new ways to torture poor Dresden. He's starting to suffer from Superman syndrome, where he realistically is too powerful for most non god-level enemies to be able to beat up, yet being beat to the point of being nearly dead is kinda Harry's thing. I'm currently wondering where he's going to take the story next. I hear some rumors about book 18, but nothing definitive. That said, he's clearly been building to one inescapable endgame for the character. The only question is how long it's going to take to get there.Senor Natural wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 8:15 pmI read a lot, just never heard of him, order from Amazon now because it is safer than B&N and HPBs. Hopefully Butcher doesn't pull a "Gordon R. Dickson" and die before he completes his magnum opus.

I have heard him say that he always wanted to and preferred to write Sword & Dragon fantasies, but, I tried the Alexa Codera and it didn't grab me right away, so I put it down...lol..maybe I expected something more like the Dresden stuff>Tarmaque wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 10:36 pmHis "Dresden Files" books definitely improve in the middle, but you kinda have to read them from the beginning. I am reading it being over, but, am hoping he may do something with different characters and stories but the same style as Dresden, think he is pretty good at that..and I agree with your analysis
I had a chance to meet him, he was doing a book signing in a southern OH city, made the reservations and everything and then decided not to go, regret that now

Re: Fandom Fantasies on the Friday NO PO Open Thread
Supposedly book 18 will be called "Twelve Months" and come out in 2022. There is also a book 19 called "Mirror Mirror" to follow in 2023. However this is little more than rumor right now. I know he's been building for Dresden to become the new Gatekeeper, and until that happens or Butcher dies I'll expect more books.Z is for Zangie wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 10:54 pmI am reading it being over, but, am hoping he may do something with different characters and stories but the same style as Dresden, think he is pretty good at that..and I agree with your analysis
However, I agree that he should be branching out to other characters having their own stories. The one short story based on Thomas's secret society life was interesting, and I think should be expanded upon. I also liked the one short story about Goodman Gray, and I think there would be ample room to expand on the adventures of Kincaid.

Yeah, I agree with all that, and Gray is a fascinating character that he could do a lot with, because he is still kinda mysteriousTarmaque wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 11:37 pmSupposedly book 18 will be called "Twelve Months" and come out in 2022.
