The “it’s being stolen from us” thing started already in 2015. Remember… almost immediately after establishing himself as the xenophobia candidate, he proclaimed that the only way he could lose is if elections were rigged against him. From a psych standpoint, it was a brilliant ploy. Stir the fear and hatred, especially establishing the they are criminals theme. Then present yourself as “the only one” who can solve the issue, and claim that the only way you could possibly lose is if they (the criminals) steal it from you. Oh, and claim that any/all media that are not in your pocket are evil lying enemies of the state.

Think it worked? Look at all the “replacement theory” crap out there now… along with the MAGA hero worship of the erstwhile populist dictator over in Hungary.
