Re: Talk the Talk on the Tuesday Political Open Thread
Let’s talk the talk. Here’s House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, on why Republicans - after Dems thrice voted FOR it during the trump administration, are going to vote against it now: “The past debt ceiling paid for everything in the Trump administration, plus seven months of this Biden administration.”
So then. Is McCarthy correct? And if so, is that reason enough to justify a move that would crash the economy?

Of course he's not correct. The US has been carrying a massive debt for all of my life, and I just turned 70. It's not our debt that is the issue, it's defaulting on it. If they don't pass the debt ceiling rise we won't be able to borrow the money to cover our debt payments and that could crash the economy.
Re: Talk the Talk on the Tuesday Political Open Thread
I would think that’s obvious. After all, raising the debt ceiling never pays for anything. McCarthy making that claim is like a homeowner getting his credit card limit raised from $5K to $8K, and claiming that therefore all his bills are paid! Yet McCarthy’s comments are now flying around the rightwing blogosphere as gospel. This is occurring even as Mike Pence is now blaming “the media” for the Jan.6 insurrection.Runswift9 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 1:38 pmOf course he's not correct. Thanks partly to the pandemic, Donald Trump has dropped off the Forbes 400 list

Fake news! Trump is the best business man ever to be on the list. He's too good for the Forbes $00.

What I thought was hilarious was the fact that if he disinvested in real estate and his businesses and invested in basic market shares he would have comfortably been in the top third.GuideToACrazyWorld wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 8:35 pmFake news! He is literally the only person I've ever heard of who can't make money with a casino.
Drop the mic.

... that is, if his trumpiness is as rich as they say he is and he claims he is. A fact that is very much contested.

And wine…. of course, he didn’t really do those businesses. He bought things, put his name on them, and expected that to make those things valuable.Tarmaque wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 9:02 pmYou forgot steaks, booze, and football.GuideToACrazyWorld wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 8:52 pmHe is literally the only person I've ever heard of who can't make money with a casino.

Hence "bad businessman."
This is one of the reasons why people are doubtful that he's as rich as he claims to be. He considers his "brand" to be worth billions. This is not an actual tangible asset. It's also not worth nearly what it used to be.

Well that made me chortle like crazy uncle Fentmore after his second bottle.
