Re: (PO) What's up?
I think the whole Disney World fiasco is going to bite DeSantis in the butt like a giant fanged leech. You don't mess with the Mouse.
Personally if I were Bob Chapek I'd pack up my things and look for a new home for Disney World. Maybe on the Georgia coast somewhere. Then burn the old DW to the ground and dance in the ashes. But then again, I'm a vindictive bastard which is why I'm probably not CEO of the #3 largest entertainment company in the world.

Re: (PO) What's up?
Disney of course cannot just pull up stakes and move. Which is why DeSantis can do this.
A statement in a local deli today: “They didn’t care about the children. This generation of kids is lost, it’s over for them. History is written by the victors. I can’t wait to see how the history of this (covid) is written in a couple years.”
Sorry, but for an obvious conservative to make such a statement is ludicrous. First off, they cared about everyone. Did their best to prevent an overwhelming of the healthcare systems, to protect society as a whole. To prevent folks from getting the virus… including children.
Secondly, isn’t it conservos who relentlessly argue that public school is useless? That the kids would be better off home-schooled? Well, here was the opportunity. A bunch of adults could not go to work, we’re cooped up in the house with their kids who could not go to school. Are conservos arguing on the one hand that public schools are useless evil socialist indoctrination camps, and on the other that they are also critical to the development of our children?
The last sentence is the tell. Why do I bring up motivations as a discussion topic? Because one has to wonder about them when one sees the practical real-world results of political choices.

Re: (PO) What's up?
There is a great science fiction story, I think by the same name. It's one of the great writers in Science Fiction but who is escaping me right now. Maybe Bradbury? I want to say Philip K Dick but that can't be it, I didn't come out suicide on the other side of reading it. I read it many sleeps ago, but it's about a fascist country (China I think) banning Disney, and Disney flooding the country with balloons playing their movies. It's a rather amusing piece of speculative fiction.
I looked it up and it wasn't one of the big names. It was Norman Spinrad's "Year of the Mouse". CTE is acting up
I caught part of a story that Texas made some kind of offer, but I didn't care enough to follow up.

I think for most this was ignorance over heartlessness. There were a staggering number of people who belied "it's just a flu". I'd also say that I know a lot of people who didn't support the laws in the name of liberty and saw it as a necessary evil to maintain liberty.Mike wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 12:30 pmSorry, but for an obvious conservative to make such a statement is ludicrous. Personally, I think public health is a self evident role of government. That means that I don't get to cry that such actions are a "violation of liberty" even when I don't agree with them. I guess it helps that for the most part I agreed with most of the restrictions. The only thing that I thought was silly posturing was when Ca implemented a curfew. It just made no sense to me.
I can't think of anyone who I take seriously who's called public school useless. What I have seen is a lot of Republicans advocating for school choice, whether it be home schooling or private school. Some have been very hard on the current state of our educational system, but that is a little silly. There is little consistent from one state to another. Hell, in Ca there is a huge difference from one school to an other. It's always seemed weird to me when people want to criticizes the US education system It's really a conglomerate of different systems. I do understand that some people feel education should be the role of the federal government, and that is a valid discussion

I love the Ukrainian people. Seriously, I'm loving this. So now, as they destroy Russian tanks they are spray painting wolverines on them.
For those who aren't 80's kids you might not get the reference, but it's referring to this movie.
Don't question the plot holes. Just go with it.

Re: (PO) What's up?
I could see them moving to Texas, but I can also see them being leery of Texas because the same kind of laws that Florida is passing are happening in Texas too. So is Georgia, but to a much lesser extent. Disney already has a big investment in Georgia (they make a lot of Marvel movies there) so that's a logical move for them. However Disney has threatened to pull their movie business from Georgia due to proposed laws before. It's a whole lot easier to pull movie production out of a state than it is to pull a theme park.GuideToACrazyWorld wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 3:39 pmI caught part of a story that Texas made some kind of offer, but I didn't care enough to follow up.

I find it hard to take a side when an obstructive government is fighting with a company that controls our media. I kind of just want them both to take each other out.Tarmaque wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 4:07 pmI could see them moving to Texas, but I can also see them being leery of Texas because the same kind of laws that Florida is passing are happening in Texas too. Re: (PO) What's up?
I've never seen it. The whole premise always seemed just too ludicrous to be enjoyable. I hear the remake in the 2000's is simply awful too. North Korea invading the United States? That's a bigger fantasy than all of Marvel combined. I find Norse space gods easier to believe, and a whole lot more fun.

You are thinking about it all wrong. It is so ludicrous that it is enjoyable in a I'm laughing at you not with you sort of way.
Also, for us 80's kids its nostalgic.

I'm loving the irony over a twitter. Half the employees are worried that Musk will ban or silence "political candidates" and the other half are worried he might reinstate Trump.
Gotta love it.

Re: (PO) What's up?
I think this is little more than a vanity acquisition for Musk. Twitter has lost money for 8 of the last 11 years (or something like that.) Musk is a nut and I'm sure he believes in unlimited free speech, but that doesn't make that belief a sound business model. Personally I hope he drives it into the ground like a tent peg and it's never heard from again. Trump has been emphatic that he's not coming back to Twitter, although we all know what a Trump promise is worth.
I am reminded of a comment somewhere else today, about a guy getting rid of his old car. "I could put $3500 in cash in the glove box and my car would then be worth nothing!"

My nostalgia for the 80's begins with The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension and ends with Big Trouble in Little China. I was a weird kid.

Both much much better movies. I love Buckaroo Banzai It was supposed to be a series of movies. I'm heart broken that it didn't turn out. And don't forget Remo Williams

Re: (PO) What's up?
Remo Williams was a terrible movie, but a lot of fun. Apparently it is based on a series of adventure novels called "The Destroyer" but doesn't really portray the characters very well. I haven't read the novels, but apparently they're super whacky.

I found it interesting. It is perhaps the best explanation of "privilege" I've ever seen, but he slyly avoids using the word at all.

I watched the entire video wanting to fully understand his conclusion and what was being said. My conclusion was that luck played a very important part of one's success from another's.GuideToACrazyWorld wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 9:59 pm

So if luck was the distinguishing missing value then why would people such as the BLM or social leftist be dogging on white people?

Re: (PO) What's up?
These are people who believe that the sins of the father are passed to the son. But the people who are dogging white people are the minority. Unfortunately, they are so loud that they often cause confusion and make it hard to hear more responsible voice.
Tying it all back to luck, for a centuries the most unlucky position in the world was to be born black in the US.
