Throwback Thursday on the PO
Good Morning, sorry I am late...what thing (s) do you remember from the past that made an impression on you? Music of the time of my HS comes to mind...how I had endless energy, and yes, I could party all night and still go to work in the morning...lol...many things I remember fondly.

They played this song to death during our "ten minute break" in the morning between 1st and 2nd period ...on the intercom, there were others, but, this one came to mind first.

It's fine if you wear your electric boots and mohair suit.Z is for Zangie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 02, 2022 2:34 pmThey played this song to death during our "ten minute break" in the morning between 1st and 2nd period ...on the intercom, there were others, but, this one came to mind first.
(I heard that line for decades and never knew that "mohair" is just fine wool off an angora goat. Not to be confused with wool from an angora rabbit. Apparently "mohair" sounds better than "goat wool." It's one of those terms that is just confusing. Another is "baby llama wool." No, it is not the wool of a baby llama, but llama wool where the diameter of the hairs are extra thin. It is reputed to be finer and softer than angora rabbit wool, and is about half as expensive.)

Re: Throwback Thursday on the PO
It's a satire of the state of popular music in the early 70's. This is the same time that Glam Rock and early hair bands were getting their starts. Ironically, it's also the era when Elton John's extravagant stage shows erupted onto the scene. The lyrics written by Bernie Taupin were both a criticism of the industry and an acknowledgement that he and Elton were dependent on it. A year or so later Pink Floyd released a more biting song called Have a Cigar off the album Wish You Were Here. While ostensibly the album was about their former friend and bandmate Syd Barrett, it also includes some commentary on the music industry and its effect on talent. It's doubtful that the music industry was a primary cause of Barrett's mental illness and institutionalization, but Roger Waters could certainly see the effect the business had on plenty of other artists.GuideToACrazyWorld wrote: ↑Thu Jun 02, 2022 6:08 pmThat is the one Elton John song I just don't get. That said, Bennie and the Jets is more a criticism of the music and performance culture, while Have a Cigar is a criticism of the management and exploitation of musical acts.

That's the impression as well. By not get it, I didn't mean I don't understand it, I meant it just doesn't speak to me.Z is for Zangie wrote: ↑Thu Jun 02, 2022 9:35 pmI don't think I got it or anyone else either...lol....it just sounded cool....
