Utah Sen. Mitt Romney announced Wednesday that he will not seek reelection in 2024.

Romney is known in the Senate as a frequent bipartisan negotiator and was the only Senate Republican to vote twice to convict former President Trump following separate impeachment trials. Romney, 76, noted in a video statement that he would be in his mid-80s by the end of another term and said he is opting to make way for new voices.

"While I'm not running for reelection, I'm not retiring from the fight," he said.

But, he said, "it's time for a new generation of leaders. They're the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in."

Romney has spent more than 25 years working in public service, including as the Republican Party's nominee for president in 2012. His announcement comes as Republicans aim to retake control of the Senate next year.

I don't like Romney's policies, but I do think he does what he thinks is best for the country. It must be hard to try and be an honest man in DC. Congratulations to him,.

Let's be honest with ourselves here: Utah will indubitably elect someone worse than he is to replace him. He was that rarity in the Senate today; a Senator who focuses on policy instead of "Democrats are bad, M'kay!" I may not agree with his policy positions, but at least he's working towards something.

Then again, I don't blame him for getting out. In fact, I applaud him for retiring at a reasonable age. I think he's trying to set an example for some of these ancient old Congresscritters, some of which have been around since before I could even vote.

This is such bullshit ! This guy is a good guy helping a lot of people. This is where we're going with politically correct, same as in politics it's extending into all fields. Submit and be controlled - WE will decide what is best and what you need to know
