Thursday NO PO) Today is Pumpkin Day, Mincemeat Day & Mole Day

Post by Z is for Zangie » Thu Oct 26, 2023 12:27 pm

Yea for pumpkins, especially carved ones...and pumpkin pie and pumpkin seeds...lol... We have a ton of local people who grow and sell them by the side of the road in my neighborhood...unfortunately, I don't decorate for Halloween anymore and I never bake...lol...I tried making roasted pumpkin seeds a few times and they didn't turn out so well

Mincemeat is an English thing, as a pie with meat and fruits and some form of alcohol in it...here in the US it doesn't usually have meat in it...I only know it as the mincemeat pies my great aunt used to make and were a favorite of my exes ( I never tried one) I know she used raisins but, not sure what else ( when I was younger I though there was meat in it and it grossed me out...lol....Here is a common recipe from the internet:

2

large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, chopped
1

cup apple cider
1

cup candied red cherries

cup dark brown sugar
½

cup dried apricots, chopped
½

cup dried cherries
½

cup dried cranberries
½

cup dried currants
½

cup dried figs, chopped
1

tablespoon finely grated orange zest
½

cup fresh orange juice
½

cup golden raisins
½

cup raisins
¼

cup schmaltz or unsalted butter
½

teaspoon ground allspice
½

teaspoon ground cinnamon
½

teaspoon ground ginger
¼

teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
¼

teaspoon ground cloves
¼

teaspoon kosher salt
1

cup dark rum, divided

This all sounds good to me

Though there is a pic of a cartoon Mole dressed like a scientist, Mole day is not about the mole itself but a mathematical expression expressed as this and called a "mole": The MOLE (mol) is a unit of measurement that is the amount of a pure substance containing the same number of chemical units (atoms, molecules etc.) as there are atoms in exactly 12 grams of carbon-12 (i.e., 6.022 X 1023). All Greek to me...lol

Mincemeat pie comes from middle ages recipes that often combined sweet things with their meats. It was a way of preserving the meat and fruit when they were plentiful, and then making them in the winter months when the fruits in particular were hard to come by. It apparently also added flavor to lesser cuts of meats, which were those most likely to be used for mince. These dishes were also usually heavily spiced, for those who could afford it. Sugar at the time was also very expensive, and a way for the rich to demonstrate their wealth.

Z, you could start a new category called Fun Facts
--
Mexico City was initially built on a lake in 1325 A.D., however, the Mexico City we see today is sinking around 3.2 feet every year. Before the arrival of the Europeans, the Aztecs filled in Lago de Texcoco in order to create an artificial island, which the Spaniards built on top of the ruins in 1521.
