Adding Discriptions to Topics

Post by GuideToACrazyWorld » Sat Sep 07, 2019 1:26 pm

Someone had mentioned the description field from Disqus. This is something that I honestly just didn't think about while building this site. There are two options that might work for this here.

1. There is an extension that adds a freeform topic description field. It could be used to enter key words or description in sentence structures.

2. There is another extension that allows us to define prefixes and users can select a prefix while creating a topic. This is much more of a structured option.

Either one or both can be tested. I will have to make sure they work with all the styles we are offering but I wanted to through it out there for discussion and see if there is interest.

I would be happy just being able to pin a comment in a thread to the top. That'd serve the same purpose. As to the proposed extensions, the first sounds better.

That is a separate thing. I haven't seen an extension that does this so I'd have to look at it as custom development. I'm not sure it could be done, or at least not with my skill level. I can get all technical if you want, but I suspect you don't lol

If this would result in something is always on page 1 of the topic, whether the view is sorting oldest first or newest first, then I would vote for this.

Although, topic starters putting the stuff we used to put in the description field in their first post seems to work, too. But it's always the first post made in the topic so only shows up as the first post on page 1 *if* the person is sorting oldest to newest. Which is what I do.

I also may not be understanding what people are asking for.

Not this isn't about post. Just a short description that will be beneath the title of the topic. Similar to the descriptions from disqus.

Me either, that's what these discussions are for.

Disqus had tags. The closest thing to that would be a list of predefined prefixes. Which is one option?

The other options it to offer a description field, but could be used to add tags, or even a full sentence or two describing the topic.

Or we could do both.

When I used tags on AA, I used them like a filing cabinet.... to quickly find what I was looking for... so a simplified search tool
When I used them on SS, I (and many others) used them as clever/biting/sarcastic one-liners.... so a comic description

That makes sense because Disqus didn't have a real search function. We have a real search function here, that makes the need for tagging for searches un necessary. Feel free to play around with it, it's a nice feature to have.
