We move heaven and earth
In the worlds of our mind
The shell is all they see
From the day of our birth
Forgone are the nights we all try to remember.
The self shrinks from the shell
Bit by bit, inch by inch
Flesh pulled from cold moist bone
Creating a prison hell
Forsaken by those who leave us in embers.
The shell smiles empty and hidden
Moving in gilded worlds
Spinning, aloof, asleep
Lost in a life hidden
Rotting on the floor like the leaves of September.
Drawn back into ourselves
Snakes eating our own tails
Until there is nothing
Empty, hallow, alone
In the end the shell is all that remains.

Re: Shells
Kind of overwhelming, heavy to lift. But thank you - I'm going to have to think about this

Thank you for contributing
I appreciate the trip to the dark side, the reflective insight and the visceral quality of your poem.
Very true also, our 'shell' is all that is visible to others, our outer self gives away no clues of the weathering of our 'inner self'.

Not exactly, I just don't get as much time to write as I once had. 3 year olds are assholes.

Re: Shells
"3 year olds are assholes" ... Been there done that. I had a long haitus from writing, not because I wanted to, but because, well ...3, 4, 5, etc year olds indeed can be right little demanding assholes. All that filled with the wonder of the world, and rambunctious energy...it passes. My two are young adults now and marvelous creatures...and pretty much need nothing of me. It helps that they are both creatives. So they get it.GuideToACrazyWorld wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 3:38 pmNot exactly, I just don't get as much time to write as I once had. 3 year olds are assholes.
